Key Definitions & Terminology

  • Tree: A tall plant with a single thick, hard, woody main stem called a trunk, deep-anchoring roots, and elevated branches (e.g. mango, neem, banyan).
  • Shrub: A medium-sized, bushy plant with multiple thin, hard, woody stems growing close to the ground (e.g. rose, hibiscus, tulsi, curry leaf).
  • Herb: A small plant with soft, green, tender stems that do not become woody (e.g. mint, coriander, tomato, mustard).
  • Grass: A type of herb characterized by hollow stems and long, thin, flat leaves (e.g., lawn grass, bamboo, sugarcane, grain plants).
  • Climber: A plant with thin, flexible, weak stems that cannot stand upright on its own and grows by climbing upward using external support (e.g. money plant, jasmine, bottle gourd).
  • Creeper: A plant with thin, flexible, weak stems that grows by spreading horizontally along the ground (e.g. pumpkin, watermelon, snake gourd).
  • Bark: The hard, protective outer covering of a tree trunk.
  • Rafflesia: The largest flower in the world, found in Mizoram, which can grow as large as an umbrella.

  • Roots: Anchor the plant in the soil and absorb water and nutrients.
