Chapter at a Glance

This chapter introduces students to material science, teaching them to examine everyday objects, identify what they are made of, and trace their natural sources. Students learn to classify materials based on their optical properties (transparent, translucent, opaque) and physical traits (hardness, flexibility, sound conduction). The chapter also teaches children how to categorize matter into solids, liquids, and gases, and how to distinguish between natural and artificial (man-made) things.

Key Definitions & Terminology

  • Material: The matter or substance from which an object is made (e.g. wood, metal, glass, plastic, fabric, clay).
  • Ore: Natural rock or sediment from which metals are extracted.
  • Alloy: A solid mixture of two or more metals (e.g. steel, brass, bronze).
  • Transparent: Materials that allow light to pass through completely, making objects behind them clearly visible (e.g. clear window glass, spectacles).
  • Translucent: Materials that allow light to pass through only partially, making objects behind them appear blurry or dim (e.g. frosted glass, thin colored plastic, paper lampshades).
  • Opaque: Materials that do not allow any light to pass through, blocking vision completely (e.g. wood, metals, cardboard).
  • Solid: Matter that has a fixed, rigid shape and does not flow (e.g. stones, spoons, ice, wood).
  • Liquid: Matter that flows, has no fixed shape, and takes the shape of its container (e.g. water, honey, oil, ink).
  • Gas: Matter that has no fixed shape or volume, flows freely, and spreads out to fill any space (e.g. air, smoke, steam).
  • Natural: Things that occur in nature without human effort. They can be living (plants, animals) or non-living (rocks, water, air).
  • Artificial: Man-made items created by human manufacturing (e.g. tables, clothes, plastic bottles).

  • Gases: Flow, float out of open cups.

  • Wood is a organic resource from trees.
  • Glass is manufactured primarily from sand.
  • Plastics, synthetic rubbers, and paraffin wax are synthetic materials derived from petroleum found deep underground. These are non-biodegradable.
